Today, cancer treatment requires the combined expertise of specialists from a variety of disciplines: medical oncology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology in addition to many other specialties. And because cancer touches virtually every aspect of a patient's life, healthcare professionals such as oncology nurses, social workers, psychologists, dietitians, and others are an integral part of the patient's care team.
Forming the foundation of each Cancer Center are 12 multidisciplinary treatment centers, each of which brings together a diverse team of specialists and other healthcare professionals to work collaboratively on behalf of patients.
Organized by specific types of cancer, these treatment centers offer a comprehensive array of services. These range from screening and diagnosis to individualized care plans offering the latest, most promising treatments, including access to investigational therapies through clinical trials. In addition, each treatment center provides convenient access to a wide array of other services, such as:
- genetic counseling
- individual and family counseling
- educational programs and support groups
- pain management and palliative care
- complementary therapies
- information about cancer
Treatment centers are located within the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center and the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center.
